Weight: Cooper has been tipping the scales! He now weighs 9 lbs 8 oz. He’s still gaining about an ounce or more a day.
Clothes: His newborn clothes are almost too tight – especially his adorable sleepers that Babcia bought for him, but his 0-3 are still a little big (especially pants).
Health: Cooper had a hard week health wise. After getting some advice from friends and doing some researching, I was concerned that Cooper was sensitive to something in my diet and it was contributing to his fussiness. So I cut out wheat, dairy, and citrus. Then on Thursday, he threw up after a feeding. Of course I freaked out and called the pediatrician. We went to see the pediatrician to have him checked out. She determined that it wasn’t my diet that was causing Cooper discomfort, it was that Cooper has GERD (Gastroesophageal reflux disease). She put him on prescription Zantac. She still thinks that he is colicky and that won’t go away until about month three. So far the Zantac has helped his fussiness a little bit, but I still think he is experiencing symptoms for GERD that are making him uncomfortable. The pediatrician indicated that they would change his medicine in a week if it didn’t help, so I’ll probably call them today to see what we can do.
Then on Saturday morning there was blood in his stool. I freaked out again and called the pediatrician. They were a little concerned, and said that if he had more bloody stools, a fever, or was inconsolable to call them. We watched him all Saturday afternoon and evening, and he didn’t have any more symptoms. So I was thinking it might have just been a one time thing, until Wednesday he had two more diapers with a little blood. So now I am definitely calling the pediatrician again.
In some good news – his tear duct blockage has totally cleared up! No more eye gunk – yay!
Crying: The joys of a colicky baby. Poor guy is still super fussy and crying a lot. The Zantac has helped a little bit though. He still loves to be carried, and not in a carrier. So we are struggling with that since it is hard on the back to carry him around all day.
Sleep: Cooper was still sleeping good at night at the end of last week and over the weekend. He went to sleep about 9:30pm or 10pm, woke up once around 2am for a feeding, and then slept until 6:30am. The past few nights he has woken up at midnight and 2am or 3 am for a feeding. I don’t know if it’s a symptom that’s related to the GERD, but I am missing the extra sleep I used to get. I try to fit in more naps for myself during the day to make up for it.
He will only fall asleep in someone’s arms though, so we need to work on that. We tried putting him down once in his crib this week awake and he cried for about 10 minutes. It broke our hearts to hear him cry like that. We felt horrible, so Kirk ended up rocking him to sleep.
Social and Activity: Babcia has been coming over almost every day to spend a couple of hours with Cooper. Whether I take a nap, take a shower, or go run an errand while she is here – it is nice to have the little break and an extra set of hands. And I love that Cooper and his babcia are able to spend so much time together and hopefully she does too!
Likes and Dislikes: Still loves hanging out on his activity mat – preferably naked. He still hates his tummy time most days, but I am noticing that he is hating it less and less and is raising his head more and more.
He also loves looking at windows – especially ones with blinds. I think the horizontal pattern of the blinds is interesting to him.
We have also been going on more walks around our neighborhood park. Sometimes he is awake for the walks, but mostly he sleeps through them.
Diet: Still breastfeeding. I have noticed that he has slowly been reducing the overall time he eats during the day. He is still gaining a good amount of weight, so maybe he is just getting more efficient at eating?
Baby Gear Love: Still loving the activity mat. It can keep him occupied for 10-15 minutes a couple of times a day.
Milestones: Cooper turned 1 month old this week. Mom and dad celebrated by having some wine (for me ) and scotch (for dad). Cooper celebrated by taking a bath.
Cooper all dressed up in a tie for his birthday celebrations.
He has also rolled over twice – from his belly to his back. I guess he will go to any length to get off his stomach!
We have also noticed more and more smiling from him. I still don’t think it’s in response to us necessarily, but it’s still so fun to see.
Cooper and Dad got me some beautfiul flowers for Valentine’s Day!
