The other big project we have been currently undertaking is a kitchen semi-remodel. I’m not really calling it a full remodel because we* didn’t do much to the cabinets (except reconstructing one to fit the new sink).
We* took off the old corian countertops that came standard with our house when we built it, and installed slab granite. We* added a backsplash, and installed a new sink. The sink is AWESOME! It’s a stainless steel farmhouse sink, with a single bowl I love how big it is. I can wash anything in it.
*I use the term “we” loosely. It was pretty much all Kirk and my dad. I helped clean things, bring tools and beers, gave updates on olympic events and scores, and other non-strenuous tasks. I did help install the backsplash though and it was fun! Fitting together some of the tiles was kind of like a puzzle and anyone that knows me knows that I just love puzzles!
Before (super old picture – from the first week we moved in over 7 years ago)
After. I probably need to update the curtains, but that is fairly easy. I just need to find a fabric that will work better with the new colors.
Here is a closeup of the tile backsplash and the granite. The backsplash is a mix of travertine, granite, and glass. The granite is called Ciantus, is from Brazil, and looks absolutely beautiful. It coordinates so well with the cabinets and has tiny flecks of mica in it that coordinate with the stainless steel. You can also see that we replaced all the switches/outlets with brown ones. The existing white ones that we had were too harsh against the backsplash. I think the brown ones coordinate a little better.
Here is a view of the bar area before and after. A few years ago (pre-blog) we installed the wine fridge and bottle rack. Except that the fridge is on the fritz and we’ll probably have to replace it with a new one in the next few months. Fun!
